Description
The Tragedy of Bitlis
is one of the few English language primary accounts of the Armenian genocide. Although compiled by Grace H. Knapp, the book is based on the eyewitness accounts of two American women Grisell M. McLaren and Myrtle O. Shane. Their narratives chronicle the stages of the genocide in the remote eastern Anatolian town of Bitlis: the massacre of the men, deportation of the women and children, the siege by the Russian army and finally the end of World War I.
Originally published in 1919,
The Tragedy of Bitlis
illuminates the Armenian experience in Bitlis in the summer and fall of 1915. It can be read critically with Clarence Ussher's
An American Physician in Turkey
and Rafael de Nogales's
Four Years Beneath the Crescent.
