Description
When Leslie Davis, United States consul in Harput from 1915 to 1917, ventured out of the city, he found that the Ottoman policy of deportation went much further than forcible relocation: in his repeated forays into the countryside he saw the bodies of thousands of Armenians. Davis realized the need for a detailed record of the atrocities and brought along a doctor who determined and described the causes of death.
The Slaughterhouse Province
is a summary of his findings in a report sent to the US State Department in 1918. At the time, little attention was paid to it and it was filed away in an obscure archive. Susan K. Blair, a scholar doing research in the US government archives on Turkey and the Near East, came upon the report almost seven decades after Davis sent it. Her introduction puts the document in its historical context and sketches the life of the man who wrote it.
In an age when the perception of events is too often shaped by whichever side of the controversy has the larger public relations budget, a document like the Davis Report is urgently needed. A straightforward, dispassionate description by an eyewitness who was neutral, the report will disabuse readers of the skewed picture of the 1915 deportations and their aftermath.
The Slaughterhouse Province
consists of Davis's report, his dispatches sent from Harput, his photographs, an introduction by Susan K. Blair, a copy of the deportation proclamation and other documents relating to the genocide.
