The Council of Chalcedon and the Armenian Church grew out of the groundbreaking research carried out by Karekin I, the late Catholicos of All Armenians, during his doctoral studies at Oxford University. In his study, he delves into the position that the Armenian Church officially took in 506 CE with regard to the Council of Chalcedon. This is the most decisive phase in the long history of the relationship between the Armenian and Chalcedonian Churches and the cause of the separation between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenian Church.

This volume corrects many conflicting statements about this period and opens a window into the innerworkings of the early Armenian Church. It also has ecumenical importance: at a time when the Churches are growing closer together, an understanding of the Monophysitism of the Armenians is essential for fruitful dialogues and inter-Church discussions.

Karekin I explains why Armenians rejected the decisions made at the Council of Chalcedon, while most other Christians accepted it without question. His careful explanation of the Armenian Church's doctrine seeks to improve Western understanding of factors in Eastern Christianity which have long been misunderstood.
