Description
Raffi: The Prophet from Payajuk
is a biography of Raffi--Hakob Melik-Hakobian--the founder of Eastern Armenian literature. In the nineteenth century, Raffi developed primitive, rough and disorganized language into rich, gentle and orderly language of the nascent Armenian novel. He wrote in simple, clear, flexible vernacular with an elegant and lyrical style.
Raffi was born into a wealthy merchant family in the remote Persian village of Payajuk. He grew up among common people and saw their wretchedness. He assumed the responsibilities of the family business, but yearned to become a writer with the hope of awakening his people's spirit and delivering his message of enlightenment and freedom.
He wrote enthralling novels and became the most ardent and zealous interpreter of his nation's bitter and anguished experiences and the most skillful interpreter of its thoughts and emotions. He instilled patriotic ideas in his readers and aroused their national pride and bravery. He motivated and galvanized a generation, giving the Armenian people personality and character.
Raffi was the greatest force behind Armenia's emancipation and liberation from servitude and domination. He was the apostle of freedom by revolution and a tireless advocate of freedom of thought and conscience. Raffi is the nation's novelist.
