AREVIG, the Western Armenian computer-based language course, is the result of a long and patient teamwork effort carried out in Aleppo and Beirut. An initiative of the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, it is placed under the high patronage of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia.

The work has been carried out within the scope of activities for the commemoration of the 1600th anniversary of the invention of the Armenian alphabet by St. Mesrob Mashdots, the first Armenian teacher. It is presented under an attractive and interactive form and invites pupils to follow a progressive course, convivial and personalized enabling them to acquire from the most elementary notions to a perfect command of the Armenian language.

This course has three levels. In the first level, the student will acquire step by step reading skills and the elementary notions of the Armenian language. In the second level, s/he will learn indispensable notions of grammar (morphology, phonetic, syntax and composition) as well as notions of literature normally taught at the 4th to the 8th grade levels. The third level will include more advanced notions of syntax, grammar and general Armenian knowledge and will lead the student to a fluent conversation in Armenian, comparable to the 9th to 11th grade levels.
