The Promise at the Sea

The Promise at the Sea HC

By Vitali Ianko

The author writes the story of Nargiz and her family in a story that intermingles tragedy and romance throughout. It is a story filled with love, betrayal, suspense, and miraculous escapes.

Readers of this fictionalized memoir will come away with a much clearer sense of what happened during the Armenian Genocide.

The story is narrated by Nargiz, the last survivor and a medium who is devoted and obliged to remembering her lost loved ones. Nargiz wavers between the frightened young girl who barely survives the years of the Armenian Genocide and the sharp older woman she becomes.

Sad, funny, strange, and based on a true story, this book is a long caravan of thoughts and reminiscences carrying a weighty notion: Tell to remember, and remember to keep the dead alive.

The author, Ianko, received a doctorate in engineering in the former Soviet Union. He has authored articles on medicine and psychology. He lived in Armenia from 1971 to 1991. He is currently a visiting professor at the Center for Study of Human Development at Brown University in Rhode Island.
