Revolution and Genocide

Revolution & Genocide-R.Melson

By Robert Melson

Jews in Germany and Armenians in Turkey survived as minorities until they suffered destruction as the old regimes were engulfed in revolution. In this work, Melson compares these genocides with each other and with similar atrocities in the Soviet Union and Cambodia.

Melson, a professor of political science and co-director of the Jewish Studeits Program at Indiana's Purdue University, argues that genocide is often the end result of a complex process that starts when revolutionaries smash an old regime and try to reconstruct society according to new ideological visions. This fascinating book -- winner of the 1993 international PIOOM award from Leiden University for the best book on human rights -- is a thoughtful look at the actions behind genocide.
