Hokiss Kezmov Geh Khayda, Kemal Yalcin

Hokiss Kezmov Geh Khayda-Kemal

By Kemal Yalcin

While not a household name, Turkish writer Kemal Yalcin has won awards for his novels, short stories, and poems. Born in an ancient Greek town in Turkey in 1952, he has lived in Germany since 1982, where he teaches Turkish language. His novels have made him controversial in his homeland of Turkey.

In this novel, You Rejoice My Heart -- this edition is in western Armenian -- Yalcin interviews survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and victims of the 1942 wealth law, which punished Armenians, Greeks, and Jews. He also speaks to survivors of the Ashkale labor camps and visits Ani and Aghtamar.

Three days before his book was to be published in Turkey, Yalcin's publisher received a call from officials and the book was shelved. More than 3,000 copies of the book, already printed, were shredded.
