Garoong

Garoong / The Crane

By Peter Khanbegian

A saga of three generations in one Armenian family.

Garoong is an electrifying tale of one Armenian family. Blazing with life, suspense, and passion, the story flows from Armenia in the early 1900s to America's college campus activism of the 1960s.

In part one, Sahag and Avedis, surviving a bloody massacre in their village, escape to America where they struggle to cope with complexities of life in the new world. The author takes you on a journey to the woolen mills of Massachusetts in the early part of the century, to the farmlands of New Hampshire, and to Victorian Boston with its elegant hotels and gas lit streets.

In part two, Antranig, Sahag's only son, pursues his identity as a first-generation American and serve his nation as a naval commander in World War II. He goes on to marry a non-Armenian, against his father's lifelong wishes, tearing himself from his father's unyielding allegiance to the Armenian cause. The third generation of the family goes on to obsess over a search for his Armenian roots.

A merger of fiction and history, this fast-paced saga grips readers with its courageous men and bold-spirited women. In its universal themes of hatred and love, revenge and forgiveness, the author gives us a compelling novel, giving voice to the struggle of a people overcoming the odds to find freedom and identity in a new land.
