The genesis of the book was a photographic and documentary exhibition at the Civico Museo Archeologico in Milan in 1995, that was dedicated to Armin T. Wegner, a German intellectual who fled to Italy in 1936. A photographer, writer, poet, and civil rights activist, Wegner had been an eyewitness to the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

Contains pictures taken by Wegner in Armenian refugee camps throughout the Ottoman Empire, maps, historical charts, and other documentary material.
