Armenian Cilicia-UCLA series#7

Edited by Richard Hovannisian and Simon Payaslian. Cilicia, situated at the Northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea, came under Armenian rule for the first time during the reign of Tigran the Great, in the 1st century B.C.

Centuries later, the waves of westward migration after the collapse of the Bagratuni Kingdom in Greater Armenia culminated in the establishment of the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia, in the 12th century.

Armenian Cilicia experiences a brilliant cultural era known as the Silver Age, with major advances in science, medicine, theology, philosophy, astronomy, musicology, art and architecture, until it fell to the invading Mamlouk armies in 1375.

In the 16th century, Cilicia and most of the historic homelands to the east were incorporated into the Ottoman empire, where Armenian life continued for four centuries until the calaminous events of the late 19th and early 20th century violently eliminated Armenian presence there.

Scholars from various disciplines offer the story of the Armenian presence in Cilicia.
