The remarkable opera Anoush of Armen Tigranian which was created by the very famous poem of Hovhannes Toumanian. This video features the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Armenia; Artistic Director Tigran Levonian; Conductors Yuri Davtyan and Michael Avedisian.

Dikranian, born in 1879 in Alexandropol, became a music teacher at an Armenian school in 1905. It was during that time he became acquainted with Toumanian's poem. He began composition of the opera in 1908 and finished in 1912, when it was first performed. The actual opera as we know it today, however, was not complete until 1938, after periodic changes and elaborations by the composer.

The opera is about love and how it gave sacrifice to customs. Young beautiful Anoush loves shepherd Saro. At first it seems nothing can prevent their happiness, but during the wedding a fatal accident eventually robs Anoush of her sanity.

Anoush is played by Anahit Mekhitaryan, Saro by Drastamat Petrosyan, and Mossi by Konstantin Simonyan
