Armen Dikranian's opera Anoush, based on Hovhannes Toumanian's poem of the same name is performed in this two-CD set by Alexander Sbendiarov's Academic Operatic Ballet Choir and Orchestra; Choir Conductor Roupen Ayvazian; Orchestra Conductor: Hagop Vosganian.

Dikranian, born in 1879 in Alexandropol, became a music teacher at an Armenian school in 1905. It was during that time he became acquainted with Toumanian's poem. He began composition of the opera in 1908 and finished in 1912, when it was first performed. The actual opera as we know it today, however, was not complete until 1938, after periodic changes and elaborations by the composer.

The opera is about love and how it gave sacrifice to customs. Young beautiful Anoush loves shepherd Saro. At first it seems nothing can prevent their happiness, but during the wedding a fatal accident eventually robs Anoush of her sanity.
