The candles are blown out at the end of the dance, indicating to the guests that it is time to go home. For two millennia, independent armenian states existed sporadically in the region between the northeastern corner of the mediterranean sea and the caucasus mountains, until the last medieval state was destroyed in the fourteenth century. This consists of oud (lute), kanuna (board zither) and often percussion from dombak.

Eastern and western armenian diverged further during the period of soviet rule, from 1920 to 1991, because of the isolation of armenian communities in the union of soviet socialist republics (ussr) and because of spelling changes to the eastern dialect in armenia.

Komitas

War and suffering continue to plague the armenian republic, parts of which remain devastated by the massive earthquake of 1988, but the armenian people have ensured their survival in the strong roots they have put down in all the places the winds of change have carried them.
