Originally, this creative flexibility in all its forms was part of a conscious effort to allow new life to rise, like the phoenix, from the ashes of the land laid waste by attempted genocide. It can also be painful to acknowledge that all human beings have the capacity to initiate, or to participate in, persecution. My own experience - of all folk dance really, but armenian dance in particular - is that what happens in the feet, how the feet feel the ground they dance upon, is very important.

I find it profoundly inspiring that even when a people, culture, and homeland is as comprehensively devastated as was armenia, what was destroyed can be put back together by its survivors - not as it was, but in a new way.

The last armenian king of cilicia, levon vi lousinian, emigrated to france, where his grave still can be seen in the st. In the famous tri-lingual behistun inscription of persian king darius the great (522-486) the same country is referred to as 'armenia' in the persian and elamite versions, and 'urartu' in the akkadian version. The land on which this art was created and the people who fashioned it were destroyed. Already in the summer of 1919, however, the turkish government of ankara, under mustafa kemal (atat¸rk), had repudiated all treaties with armenia.

Xenophone speaks in detail about the armenian villages, giving emphasis on shape and style of their houses, which he says were under ground. But rome refused and he sent another arshagouny deled in 66 and the arshagouny dynasty was established. Another was formed in constantinople, where from the days of the byzantine empire there had been an important armenian colony. Western armenian, the language originally spoken in armenian communities in asia minor, is today used by armenians in turkey, in arab countries of the middle east, and in the west.
